AMERICAN VAMPIRE

BY

A couple of weeks ago, JAMIE and I were having a discussion about our current favourite running comic books. As you might know, I talked about HELLBLAZER, but she mentioned a series where a western type story would meet a vampire story. It definitely caught my attention and I finally bought the hardcover of the five first issues.

It goes by the name of AMERICAN VAMPIRE and it introduces a new breed of vampires, with different powers and weaknesses, through decades of American history. It’s written by Scott Snyder and Stephen King and drawn by Rafael Albuquerque (the art is amazing):

“[…]  follows two stories: one written by Snyder and one written by King, both with art by future superstar Rafael Albuquerque. Snyder’s tale follows Pearl, a young woman living in 1920s Los Angeles, who is brutally turned into a vampire and sets out on a path of righteous revenge against the European monsters who tortured and abused her. And in King’s story set in the days of America’s Wild West, readers learn the origin of Skinner Sweet, the original American vampire – a stronger, faster creature than any vampire ever seen before.”

I won’t tell you more, it really is worth checking out.

MINING GAMES 2011: Edmonton

BY

By now, you should know I’m currently studying Mining Engineering and it gets me to do the craziest things ever. Last weekend the Canadian Mining Games were held in Edmonton and I was part of Polytechnique’s team. Basically, it consists of an engineering competition in which all the Canadian Universities face-off in about 20 different challenges. The events will vary from hands-on challenges to academic based questions, and may require one to twelve participants. Poly really did kick a whole bunch of asses. We finished top 3 in about every challenges, I’m specially proud of myself finishing second in the biggest challenge of all: Mine Design.

Poly ended up taking the  silver spot, 3 pts and a 3 hour deliberation away from the gold medal. It was a good run. Alberta finished 1st and McGill finished 3rd.

(Nice try, McGill bahaha <3 )

2nd in Canada, and Quebec’s finest. Word up.

FEATURE : RAPID TRANSIT

BY

You might remember the recent short documentary called UNDERCITY (if not watch it now), about Steve Duncan’s adventures in New-York’s subway. This week I had the chance to go on a similar trip of my own with Montreal’s STM. I wandered around Montreal’s subway tunnels all night long to visit the different installations. The engineering and logistic behind the construction of such infrastructures is quite amazing. I have to admit that this was pretty rad, the last guy to get a visit of the tunnels was the Prime Minister. Due to anti-terrorism measures, the STM doesn’t allow people down there anymore.

Check it out.

Calvados

BY

On the weekend, Riggins, some friends and I decided to have a cozy evening, have a chat & have a fondue. Our friend Cedric introduced us to Calvados, an apple Brandy. Originating from lower Normandy, it is the result of  the distillation of specially grown and selected apples. We drank it as a digestif, at first I didn’t taste the apple coming from the brandy, it’s really after a few sips that you can notice the subtle flavours. It takes some getting used to but I really enjoyed it.
